When I download (click and drag to my desktop) a folder with several subfolder sometimes there is a problem. The documents in some subfolders don’t always end up in the same place in the downloaded structure as in the structure on PP. The names also seem to change during the procedure. This only seems to happen when there are long pathways. I think there is a breakpoint at about 128 characters. Pathways shorter works out nice but longer than that and strange things start to happen. Can anything be done about this?
Hi Dan,
Thanks for your question. It is true that there is a limitation of around 250 characters in the total path name (from the root which is normally C: on your hard drive to the file extension) in Windows. You can read more about it here for instance http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/filenames.htm
Since this limitation does not exist on Projectplace, we have to sometimes rearrange your files and folders when dragging and dropping to allow all the contents on your hard drive. Try dragging and dropping the folder structure straight to C: to minimise the effect of this restriction.
The best way of downloading complex structures to your hard drive is by using the "compress and retrieve" which you can find under the "share" menu in Documents.
I hope this answers your question.
Best regards,
Karolina
Thank you for your answer, but I am not sure I agree that the fault is on my computers side. Just for testing I tried to recreate the problems in a model folder structure as follows:
C:\Long_foldername1\Long_foldername2\Long_foldername3\Long_foldername4\Long_foldername5\Long_foldername6\Long_foldername7\Long_foldername8
In the first folder I put a text file named test1.txt, in the second text2.txt and so on for the other folders as well. It worked perfectly well to create this on my computer (Windows XP).
I uploaded the structure to PP. It worked out well I had the same structure there with all the test-files in place.
I deleted the structure from the root of my computer.
I dragged and dropped the structure from projectplace to the root of my computer. When going through the structure now it looked normal until I looked in folder 5. In “Long_foldername5” I now got the following folders:
Long_foldername6
Long_foldernamLong_foldername7
Long_foldernamLong_foldername8
They were all empty
I also got the following files:
Test5.txt
Long_foldernamTest6.txt
Long_foldernamTest7.txt
Long_foldernamTest8.txt
The structure doesn’t look the same anymore how come?
Another thing I noticed while doing this was that if the text files didn’t contained any text they were not uploaded to PP. I had to fill them with a few characters each in order to have them copied to PP.
Hi Dan,
I will get our dev team looking at this. I'll get back to you as soon as I have some information.
Best regards,
Karolina
Hi Dan,
It's true that we can not upload or download empty files and folders.

Hi Dan,
What operating system do you use? 32 or 64-bit version?
Best regards,
Karolina
Windows XP (32-bit)
Regards
Dan
Have you tried compressing and retrieving the files from Projectplace to your computer? Hopefully this should solve the problem for you.
I tried to zip and download my test structure from above and it works. This procedure will make things a lot easier. Thank you for your help. /Dan
